Chromosomal Analysis of Product of Conception (POC)

Human reproduction has a very low success rate. Only 3 out of 10 human conceptions survive
till birth. Out of all the first Trimester Miscarriages, the majority occur due to fetal loss
complications.

In medical terms, Product of Conception (POC) refers to tissues left following a miscarriage
before 20 weeks of gestation. Tissues from a miscarriage or fetal loss after 20 weeks of gestation
are referred to as Intrauterine Fetal Demise (IUFD).

Chromosome Analysis can be performed on both the Product of Conception (POC) &
Intrauterine Fetal Demise (IUFD) to reveal abnormalities during conception.

Chromosome Analysis Methods

Chromosome analysis reveals abnormalities following a miscarriage, especially for those who
have had multiple miscarriages (Including Normal and ART Conception).

For a long time, Karyotyping was the most widely used test method for chromosome analysis on
POCs and IUFDs. However, Karyotyping analysis proves ineffective in the majority of cases.

Today, the Microarray Analysis technique has brought new, improved efficiency to chromosome
analysis. It helps confirms or rule out obvious abnormalities with 95% accuracy.

When is Chromosome Analysis a Good Idea?

Chromosome analysis is ideal for couples who

  • Want to know the right reason for miscarriage
  • Have confirmed prenatal abnormalities
  • Are planning a baby but worried about miscarriage risks
  • Have had malformations following an abortion

Q. Do RPOC resolve naturally?

In most cases, RPOC is naturally cured during bleeding. However, if there are signs of infection, it is wise to see a doctor.

Q. Can Chromosome Analysis identify Polyploidy?

Not just polyploidy, Chromosome Analysis can identify many other and more critical causes for spontaneous pregnancy loss, including molar pregnancy and maternal cell contamination.

Q. How long does a Microarray Analysis take?

A complete Microarray Analysis takes anything between 5-7 working days.
