Follicular Monitoring

Follicular monitoring is a process that is used in ART procedures such as IVF to track the development and maturation of ovarian follicles. It includes a series of ultrasound scans to check the development of the follicle on a regular basis during the menstrual cycle till the time ovaries are ready to release eggs. It helps fertility specialists to perform procedures like egg retrieval or insemination.

The follicular scan is performed to determine the high-resolution images of ovaries and the total number of mature eggs that have a chance of ovulating. This scan also helps fertility specialists to check the thickness and appearance of the uterine lining as it is important for implantation of a fertilized egg.

All You Need to Know About Follicular Monitoring

Use of Follicular Monitoring in India

  • IVF (In-vitro fertilization): During the IVF process, follicular monitoring helps to check the best time for egg retrieval. At the time of tracking the growth follicles, the doctors can determine when the follicles are mature and ready for retrieval.

  • IUI (Intrauterine Insemination): In the IUI process, follicular monitoring helps to predict ovulation which is crucial for the timing of the insemination procedure. While tracking the development of the follicles and particular hormone levels, doctors can calculate the ovulation time and plan to increase the chances of conception.

How does Follicle Tracking Work?

Follicular monitoring or tracking consists of a series of ultrasounds that help to monitor the ovarian follicle development.

  • Initial assessment: The procedure usually starts with an ultrasound scan in the early follicular phase of the menstrual cycle i.e., around 3-5 days. At the beginning of the cycle, this helps to set the baseline of the follicles in the ovaries for the number and size.

  • Monitoring growth: After every few days, follow-up ultrasound scans are performed to track the growth of the follicles.

  • Assessing hormone levels: In this, levels of hormones such as luteinizing hormone (LH) and estradiol can be measured via blood tests. These tests can provide additional information on the follicle growth and ovulation timing.

  • Predicting ovulation: The size of the follicles increases when they are mature. Doctors are likely to predict the ovulation time by tracking the follicle size and thickness of the uterine lining.

  • Timing procedures: The optimal timing of doing procedures such as egg retrieval or insemination can be determined by follicular tracking.

Follicle Size for Ovulation

During a normal menstrual cycle, the dominant follicle that will release the egg usually grows to a size of 18-25 mm. During ART procedures such as IVF, the size of the follicle before ovulation should be slightly larger, around 18-20 mm. This helps to ensure that the eggs are mature enough for retrieval.

Side Effects of a Follicular Monitoring Ultrasound

There are no such side effects of follicular monitoring or follicular ultrasound scans.

Benefits of Follicular Monitoring

  • Helps to optimize timing for procedures such as egg retrieval or insemination.
  • Allows doctors to monitor the responses of the patients to fertility medications.
  • Identify the problems related to ovulation such as irregular menstrual cycles or ovulation disorders.
  • The risk of multiple pregnancies can be reduced by closely monitoring the follicle development.
  • It will increase the chances of conception if all the procedures are performed properly.

Success Rate of Follicular Monitoring

The success rate of follicular study depends on various factors such as age, medical history, underlying infertility cause, and others.

Follicular Monitoring Price

The follicular study cost in India varies on several factors including the fertility clinic location, procedures involved, and others. The overall cost of follicular monitoring consists of medications, procedures, and additional tests.
