MicroTESE

MicroTESE (Microsurgical Testicular Sperm Extraction) is an advanced surgical procedure used to retrieve sperm directly from the testicles in men with severe male factor infertility, especially non-obstructive azoospermia. Under high magnification, the surgeon identifies and extracts tiny areas of the testis that are more likely to contain sperm, which can then be used for ICSI.

Who requires MicroTESE?

MicroTESE is recommended for men with non-obstructive azoospermia (NOA) when no sperm appear in the ejaculate due to impaired production.

Non-obstructive azoospermia
Failed or insufficient sperm from TESA/TESE
Genetic or hormonal causes of no sperm production
Men seeking sperm for ICSI

How Does MicroTESE Work?

Under an operating microscope, the surgeon examines the testicular tissue and extracts small areas more likely to contain sperm. The sample is processed in the lab; sperm found can be used immediately for ICSI or frozen.

MicroTESE Procedure

MicroTESE is performed under anesthesia:

1

Evaluation

Review of history, hormones, and prior tests to confirm NOA and suitability for MicroTESE.

2

Surgery

Small incision in the scrotum; testicular tissue is examined under the microscope and sperm-containing areas are extracted.

3

Lab processing

Tissue is processed; sperm are isolated for fresh ICSI or cryopreservation.

4

ICSI

Retrieved sperm are used to fertilize eggs in an IVF-ICSI cycle.

Benefits of MicroTESE

Higher sperm retrieval rates than conventional TESE in NOA

Minimal tissue removal

Option for biological fatherhood in severe male factor

Retrieved sperm can be used or frozen

MicroTESE Success Rate

Sperm retrieval rates with MicroTESE in NOA vary by cause (e.g. genetics, hormones). Our urologists will discuss your individual chances based on diagnosis.

Risks and Possible Complications

Risks are those of a minor testicular procedure:

Bleeding, infection, or pain at the site
Rarely, reduced testosterone production
No guarantee that sperm will be found

Recovery After MicroTESE

Recovery is usually a few days to a week. Avoid heavy exercise and wear supportive underwear as advised. You can go home the same day in most cases.

Cost of MicroTESE

Cost includes surgery, anesthesia, and lab processing. It is often part of an IVF-ICSI package. Get a detailed MicroTESE cost estimate at your consultation.
