Recurrent Pregnancy Loss

Clinically, recurrent miscarriages are defined as losing 3 or more pregnancies in a row, irrespective of the cause behind it. However, be it 3 pregnancies or just 1, a miscarriage is a huge blow to the mother's mental state and structure. Therefore, it has always been in our interests to help mothers, whether they are facing clinical recurrent miscarriages or not, to help prevent another miscarriage and give them the happiness of being a parent.

Recurrent Miscarriages

Symptoms of Recurrent Miscarriages

Recurrent miscarriage is defined as 3 or more consecutive pregnancy losses. Symptoms are those of pregnancy loss (e.g. bleeding, cramping).

Repeated pregnancy loss
Vaginal bleeding and cramping with each loss
Emotional distress

Causes of Recurrent Miscarriages

About 50–60% of first-trimester miscarriages are due to chromosomal abnormalities in the embryo. Other causes include uterine, hormonal, and immune factors.

Chromosomal abnormalities in the embryo
Uterine abnormalities (septum, fibroids)
Hormonal or thyroid disorders
Thrombophilia
Immunological factors
Infections

Diagnosis of Recurrent Miscarriages

Workup aims to find treatable causes.

Products of conception (POC) testing
Parental karyotype
Ultrasound or hysteroscopy (uterine anatomy)
Thyroid and hormonal tests
Thrombophilia screening when indicated

Treatment for Recurrent Miscarriages

Treatment depends on the cause. PGT (CCS) can select euploid embryos and reduce loss from chromosomal errors.

IVF with PGT-A (comprehensive chromosomal screening)
Surgery for uterine abnormalities
Thyroid or hormonal correction
Anticoagulation when indicated

How Recurrent Miscarriages Affects Fertility

Recurrent miscarriage does not mean you cannot have a healthy pregnancy. Identifying and treating the cause (e.g. chromosomal, uterine, hormonal) improves the chance of a successful birth.

Managing Recurrent Miscarriages

Seek a specialist evaluation after 2 or more losses. Emotional support and a clear plan help many couples achieve a healthy pregnancy.
