Recurrent Pregnancy Loss (RPL)

Recurrent pregnancy loss (RPL) is the condition in which a couple experiences 3 consecutive pregnancy loss before 20 weeks from the last menstrual period. However, there is a lack of consensus regarding the number of miscarriages to term it as RPL.

Recurrent Pregnancy Loss is also referred to as habitual abortion or recurrent miscarriage which affects almost 1% of the couples trying to conceive. Also, RPL is found in 50% of the couples in whom no obvious pathology is identified.

RPL Causes

The most common causes of Recurrent Pregnancy Loss include:

  • Genetic causes
  • Anatomic causes
  • Infectious causes
  • Hematologic causes
  • Environmental causes

Out of all the above causes, more than half of the early pregnancy losses are associated with chromosomal abnormalities.
