What Is Ovarian Hyperstimulation Syndrome

Ovarian hyperstimulation arises due to excessive consumption of injectable hormones before the in vitro fertilisation process, intrauterine insemination procedure, or ovulation induction. The result of hyperstimulation is ovarian inflammation and swelling that can also cause abdominal pains, breathlessness, and sudden weight gain. Another assumption is that ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome can be associated with the intake of fertility pills like clomiphene. OHSS commonly happens a week after the hormonal therapy and can be intensified due to pregnancy.

Ovarian Hyperstimulation Syndrome

The ovaries can sometimes be rather unpredictable performers, with a will of their own. Were they to be human beings, they'd be the type of individuals who’d have nothing good to say about meeting anyone new, including their friend, the sperm. Infrequent or absence of ovulation, brought about either by environmental or hereditary factors, may lead to abnormal menstrual periods. Abnormal menstrual periods will make it difficult for an egg cell to meet its expected companion during intercourse. What could be the consequence of this? It becomes difficult to conceive.

Stimulation of the ovaries is an effective way of encouraging egg production for the process of conception. Unfortunately, some ladies react negatively to the excessive use of hormones, leading to hyperstimulation.

Causes of Ovarian Hyperstimulation

Unfortunately, the actual causes of OHSS have not yet been discovered. The reasons behind this syndrome may include:

Polycystic ovarian syndrome
High number of ovarian follicles
Being under the age of 30
Being underweight
High levels of oestrogen in the organism before the hormone treatment
Having had OHSS before

The intake of excessive amounts of the hormone Human Chorionic Gonadotropin (HCG) could lead to OHSS. The body reacts to HCG abnormally. As a result, blood vessels swell and begin to release the liquid. This liquid blocks the ovaries' functioning and moves into the abdominal cavity.

Signs of OHSS

OHSS might appear as any of these signs:

Discomfort in the abdomen
Swelling of the abdomen
Widening of the waist
Feeling queasy
Vomiting
Loose stools
Increased responsiveness of the ovaries
Rapid weight gain
Shortness of breath

The severe symptoms could lead to controlled release of urine, formation of blood clots in the legs, and an amplification of all other symptoms stated above.

Steps to Reduce the Possibility of OHSS

OHSS can stand between you and motherhood and cause a lot of damage to your body. To be safe against the risk of developing OHSS, you need to adopt a series of measures to protect yourself and ensure that you are not vulnerable to the disorder. The quicker you take steps to avoid the problem, the sooner you will be able to welcome the baby.
