What is OHSS?

Ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome is one of the most dreaded and potentially serious complication that might occur during the fertility treatment, especially in vitro fertilisation (IVF).

Symptoms of What is Ovarian Hyperstimulation?

OHSS (Ovarian Hyperstimulation Syndrome) symptoms vary from mild to severe.

Mild: abdominal swelling, nausea, vomiting, discomfort
Moderate: abdominal distension, bloating, pain, nausea and vomiting
Severe: breathlessness, decreased urine output, blood clots

Causes of What is Ovarian Hyperstimulation?

OHSS is caused by an excessive response to fertility drugs (gonadotropins) used in IVF. Enlarged ovaries release substances that cause fluid to leak into the abdomen and sometimes the chest.

Ovarian stimulation with gonadotropins
High VEGF/HCG levels
Fluid shift into abdomen
Risk higher with PCOS, young age, high AMH, previous OHSS

Diagnosis of What is Ovarian Hyperstimulation?

Diagnosis is based on symptoms, examination, and often ultrasound during or after IVF stimulation.

Clinical assessment (weight, abdominal girth, fluid)
Ultrasound (ovarian size, fluid)
Blood tests (electrolytes, kidney function when indicated)

Treatment for What is Ovarian Hyperstimulation?

Prevention is key. If OHSS occurs, treatment is mainly supportive.

Individualised stimulation (antagonist protocol, freezing embryos to avoid fresh transfer)
Mild: fluids, pain relief, outpatient follow-up
Moderate to severe: hospitalisation, IV fluids, paracentesis if needed
Thrombosis prevention (compression stockings, heparin in selected cases)

How What is Ovarian Hyperstimulation? Affects Fertility

OHSS is a complication of fertility treatment, not a cause of infertility. It usually resolves with time. Embryo freezing and later transfer avoid pregnancy-related worsening and allow recovery before transfer.

Managing What is Ovarian Hyperstimulation?

Choose a clinic that minimises OHSS risk. If you develop symptoms, follow your doctor's advice and seek care if symptoms worsen.

Adequate fluids
Avoid bed rest (increases clot risk); stay active as advised
Report worsening pain, breathlessness, or low urine output
Attend follow-up visits
