What is IVF?

In Vitro Fertilization is a method that helps couples with fertility-related issues to conceive a child. In IVF treatment, mature eggs are retrieved from a woman's ovaries and sperm from her partner, and the resulting embryos are then fertilized in a laboratory to develop. After a few days, these embryos are then transferred into the woman's uterus.

Why is IVF Done?

Several couples who face challenges in having a baby can choose IVF treatment. Moreover, there is a wide range of infertility conditions for which an IVF specialist in India recommends IVF treatment to the patients. Below are the conditions in which the fertility experts recommend IVF:

Endometriosis
Ovulation disorders
Unexplained infertility
Low sperm count or motility
Blocked or damaged fallopian tubes

Who requires IVF?

Couples who are facing difficulties in conceiving a baby can opt for an IVF treatment. Moreover, there is a range of infertility conditions for which an IVF treatment in India is recommended by the IVF specialist to the patients.

How Does IVF Work?

IVF includes retrieving eggs from the ovaries, fertilizing them with sperm in the laboratory, and then transferring the resulting embryos into the uterus. The process is then carried out in a clearly defined set of steps under the IVF specialist's supervision.

IVF Procedure

The IVF procedure should follow these steps from the ovarian stimulation to the pregnancy testing:

1

Ovarian Hyperstimulation

The IVF Procedure starts with the stimulation of the ovaries. During a normal menstrual cycle, only one egg is released each month. So ovarian stimulation will help to enhance the number of eggs available for fertilization.

2

Oocyte or Egg Retrieval

After some days, when doctors find that the eggs are mature, they go ahead with the retrieval of eggs by using a small procedure, which is known as transvaginal ultrasound aspiration.

3

Sperm Collection

The semen sample is then collected from the male partner, which is processed in the lab to isolate healthy and motile sperm. Moreover, if there are any problem that occurs with sperm quality or quantity, then a surgical procedure known as TESA (Testicular Sperm Aspiration) might be done to retrieve sperm from the testicles or epididymis.

4

Fertilization

The process can be done through two methods. The first is retrieving eggs and sperm that are put in a laboratory dish, and it is left overnight for natural fertilization. Second, the fertilization is completed through the ICSI (Intracytoplasmic sperm injection) process, where a single sperm is then injected into each egg directly to achieve fertilization.

5

Embryo Culture

After fertilization, in this step, the embryologist will monitor the development of embryos to see whether they are properly growing and dividing or not. The best quality embryos are then chosen after the complete evaluation for the transferring process.

6

Embryo Transfer

Once the embryos are ready and well grown into a blastocyst, then they are transferred into the uterus of a women by using a thin catheter. Also, this is one of the crucial steps of the IVF process.

7

Pregnancy Test

It is the last stage of the IVF process in which, after 2 weeks of embryo transfer, the patient has to do a pregnancy test.

IVF Success Rate

IVF success rates depend on age, cause of infertility, and clinic expertise. Our centres maintain high success rates with advanced technology and with customized protocols. You can also discuss your individual prognosis with IVF specialists.

Risks and Possible Complications

Some potential complications come with an IVF treatment. However, the chances of multiple pregnancies increase, such as twins, triplets, or even higher-order multiples.

Some women might also experience an ectopic pregnancy, where an embryo implants outside the uterus, often in the fallopian tube.

Chances of premature delivery might be higher in some of the IVF pregnancies, and the baby's weight might be lower in some cases.

Since IVF cannot eliminate the risk of miscarriage, it is similar to a natural pregnancy.

Recovery After IVF

After an embryo transfer, you can resume light activities on the same day. Also, avoid doing heavy exercises and follow your doctor’s advice on progesterone support. Our specialist team will guide you through the waiting period and to the next steps.

Cost of IVF

In India, the total cost of an IVF treatment varies based on several factors like the selected fertility treatment option, medications required, location of the clinic, genetic testing, and others. Also, it is recommended to properly discuss the IVF cost with your fertility expert and with available treatment options.
